What is Hygge?

What is Hygge… the truth is, Hygge is whatever you choose it to be.

For me, Hygge is a feeling.

A feeling of being cosy and content.

A feeling of being calm and happy.

A feeling of being fulfilled.

I can feel a Hygge Moment in almost any situation ; it may be snuggled on the sofa with one of my boys, or lighting my favourite scented candle. It may be sat on the beach, running my fingers through the sand, or the smell that comes from a freshly baked cake. I feel that Hygge feeling at Christmas, when the tree is twinkling, and there is an air of excitement and anticipation. I can also feel that Hygge moment when sat in the sunshine, having a bbq with friends.

To me, it’s any moment that makes me feel happy and content. And feeling happy and content is crucial when it comes to mental well-being.

Of course, there are the ‘typical’ things to bring about those Hygge feels, mainly what I refer to as the ‘three C’s’ of candles, coffee and cake ! Thow in blankets, wax melts, fairy lights, hot chocolate, books, cosy socks, and you have yourself a serious Hygge Moment!

But for me, the core of it is Happiness. And that’s why our old name and new name work so well together; Lykke is the Danish word for Happiness. I feel it perfectly compliments Hygge.

If I’m ever feeling low, I find the combination of lighting my favourite candle (currently Gingerbread - I’m a Christmas gal at heart), a cup of tea in my favourite mug, a good book and a snuggle with one of my boys (or cats) can bring me out of that low feeling. Trying to create that Hygge Moment is so helpful to my own mental well-being. The next time you are feeling low or need a mood boost, try creating a Hygge Moment, you never know, it may help!

I’d love to know what your favourite way to bring about a Hygge Moment is?

Stay cosy
